topIntroduction

The scope of this page is to give criteria for the choice of plastics for use at CERN during the design of Power Converters, to be compliant with CERN IS41, which prohibit the use of many plastics which hitherto have been in general use, like commonly named, and for example:

  • PVC, Hypalon®, Neoprene®, Teflon®.
  • Plastics that contain halogenated fire retardants.
  • Natural and synthetic rubbers containing sulphur as the curing agent.

This Instruction applies to all equipment or installations consisting of or containing substantial amounts of plastics. It is of particular importance in experimental areas and all underground areas.
It does not apply to small parts, (HSE derogation), (like: knobs, handles, rollers, gaskets, fasteners, grommets, clips, rub strips, pulleys or small electrical parts) not significantly contributing to smoke, toxic, or corrosive gas emissions.
