topPrinciples

The idea behind all these tests is to check the immunity of a system referring to potential surrounding "noise" or surge in CERN Electrical environment. Standards must be followed since they guarantee the reproducibility of the test.

Criteria Concept to be applied to any test

class/criteria a Normal performance
class/criteria b Temporary loss of function, degradation of performance, not requiring an operator.
Analog signal deviation < 10%

Criteria Table (c, d criteria not applicable at CERN, since requiring operator action).

topElectrical fast transient/burst immunity test

This test is described in IEC 61000-4-4, and ensures system is immune to noise produced by switching inductive loads current, relay contact bounce. This test is not intrinsically dangerous (providing -in-consequence- malfunction doesn't crash the equipement). All possible lines in/out/control/external must be tested using standard curve V-shape at a 100kHz rate ideally.

topSurge immunity test

This test relies on IEC 61000-4-5, and ensures system is immune to noise produced by overvoltages from mains switching disturbances induced by power distribution systems or lightning strokes. This test can deeply damage it. All the lines in/out must be tested. (Using 1.2us/50us V-shape and 8us/20us I-shape generator).

topOther immunity tests

Talkie-Walkie Test

Use a fireman talkie walkie all around the accessible cables of the equipment, talkie walkie antenna being // to them.

Choc de Manoeuvre

This test is normally never done at the level of 400Vac system, since this kind of events is generally encountered at the level of the High Voltage level (400kV), and is not seen at the level of the 400Vac mains. Surge events are more likely since they can go through HV-LV 50Hz transformer using their Primary-Secundary capacitance.

ESD: Electrostatic Discharges

A human being (200pF capacity versus ground) can develop and discharges up to few kV, and then destroy sensitive components, or damage them (lifetime).
