  • (2017-11-24) COMBO Standard Rack width:
    • Yves + Edwin
      • Discussion is about the standard racks width for COMBO racks
        - SM18 COMBO-TDK 2 kA racks are 600 mm width, which was possible (TDK module design, from front to rear, and two converters in one rack only).
        - COMBO-DELTA racks will always be 800mm width, since the cooling of the modules is lateral.
        - Placing 6 converters in one single rack is almost impossible (rear access, for maintenance reason, and even the design, by itself), in a 600mm width rack (mainly because of DCCTs assemblies).
        - COMBO concept is normally for use in experience, or in labs. It is not likely that suddenly a batch of 10 racks is to be provided to a facility at CERN. The width is then not a big issue, by principle.
        - Setting the standard width to 800 mm allows to re-use exactly the same rear design (exception of cooling sectorisation of
        > It is then decided to set the standard rack width to 800 mm, for any COMBO rack. In case of several racks being used, or the case of one or two converter maximum being located in the rack, a specific rack design can be studided, on request and justification.

  • (2017-09-18) Commercial lab upgrade towards COMBO test capability:
    • Yves + Nicolas
      • Discussion about how to upgrade the commercial testbed towards a COMBO compatible test bed
        - Commercial lab test shall stay simple, and compatible both config panel light and standard config panel.
        - RFNA.DGLE21 being used for commercial lab must stay untouched.
        - It is nevertheless interesting to be able to use a full config panel in commercial testlab.
        - To use the standard Config Panel easily, a COMBO AC Distribution box will be installed on the commercial lab rack. It will be possible to bypass the AC Contactor command, which will stay on all the time, by the addition of a specific cable, to allow config panel light to still operate on the commercial lab testbed.
        - The COMBO AC Distribution box will need to be equipped with at least 4x AC departure, so that a full config panel can be tested (2cvs2x2 or 2cvs3x1, or even 1cvs4 which each power module being protected).
        - A new RFNA.DGLExx slot will be created to allow to dynamically assign a specific configuration (including DIM definition, with specific analog ratio).
        - Any design COMBO operation on this testbed will require the installation of a proper sensor card and an external LEM.

  • (2017-08-30) Earthing system viability versus external extraction system (common mode voltage issue):
    • Yves + Nicolas
      • Strategy for adapting current design to high common mode voltage given by REE + faut
        - An external card adding the funcitonality seems reasonnable, with a sensor card upgraded / new version.
        - This card provides: image of earthing current + Iearth integrity: fuse (only) state + 100 mA source state to control panel through existing burndy connections, and using: Rack External Fault line / signal (available).
        - Earth detection (detection of over current through threshold) + analog value to DIM still processed in config panel.
        - A manual switch will be available on upgraded sensor card to select between Active and Passive state. (dual dynamic Active/Passive state is not possible anymore, but not critical).
      • See here EDMS N°1840747

  • (2017-07-xx) Weekly Briefing:
    • Yves + Nicolas + Edwin
      • Three versions of COMBO AC-DC Aux PSU are kept:
        - one complete (pwr + fan) 3-phases,
        - one for UPS use, (Pwr + fan) 1-phase.
        - one for Fan use only (Cute case, Patch Panel Rack case for LHC600A-40V etc ...).
      • It is certainly possible that next version of these units will come with the possibility to stop the fan powering thanks to an external sensor (adding a connector for this function).

  • (2017-01-27) Weekly Briefing:
    • Yves + Nicolas + Edwin
      • People affectation on COMBO project is clarified: Yves = Project Manager, Edwin + Nicolas = Designers, Edwin + Roberto = Production + Test + Operational documentation, Yves + Nicolas = Commissioning.
        - Management is related to the creation of project initial documents (project mandate, activity plans, milestone plans, functional specifications).
        - Design (electronics, mechanics, cooling) is related to any new or specific needs on a COMBO converter, which is not covered by already existing units.
        - Production is related to the procurement, construction of . It also includes the spares, management of COMBO and spare units.
      • - Commissioning is the qualification of converters installed in the machine on final loads.
      • All tasks related to Production domain should be assigned to Roberto as much as possible (MEDICIS, COMPASS) except if they are considered as series production (SM18).
      • COMBO-MEDICIS and COMBO-SM18 project mandate and milestone plan will be updated (Yves).
      • COMBO-ELENA converters will be all mixed in one single milestone plan (Yves).
      • Nicolas must concentrate his efforts on the COMBO Config Panel design (preserie + series), to populate MEDICIS, ELENA, SM18, COMPASS projects. He will present a milestone plan within 2 weeks, at a weekly briefing.
      • Edwin will concentrate and list actions on the COMBO process: requests, orders to be placed... Edwin will integrate these tasks to be planned to his tasks control board within 2 weeks.
      • The milestone plan format will be used as much as possible, since representing a procedure + dates + easy following for many process.
      • The process for manufacturing Combo AC-DC Aux Powering Box will be the first one to be treated. Edwin will propose a first form within 3 weeks.
      • Edwin will consolidate the material stored in building 287.
      • Roberto will write the "note d'operation" for any COMBO converters (except specific cases like EIS), and he will also take care of operation suitcases.
      • Any task which could be assigned to Roberto should be integrated to his taks list. (email to Yves or direct insert here.

  • (2017-01-11) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel architecture
      • Config panel analog signals: I.out(I.LEM), and V.out(V.LEM) will be treated as follow: It is decided to always use full scale (default is [-10; 10]V scale for I.out and V.out, as much as possible).
      • Effort must be set to obtain medium precision on DIM signals & display to avoid doubt in operation.
      • V.out is used to give V.meas to FGC (SKCMD), directly processed by it (bipolar). V.out is obtained only through a series resistor to the V.LEM on the satelitte card to always deliver same corresponding current to the Config Panel Input side, which will provide V.meas from it.
      • V.out is used inside the Config Panel to set the V.trip functionality, and also for the display, which must be adapted to the display for matching the real output voltage reading.
      • I.out is given by an external LEM in the output busbar. It is also [-10; 10]V scale for [-I.max; I.max] to allow a fine I.trip functionality.
      • I.out signal is then adapted in the Config Panel to:
        - display for reading the real output current.
        - DIM, in 1-Q or in 2Q.i case adequately:
        => 1-Q : [0.5; 4.5] V.dim <=> [0; I.max]
        => 2-Q : [0.5; 4.5] V.dim <=> [-I.max; I.max].
      • Signals exchanged between satelitte and Config Panel are ideally currents to increase the immunity. (already the case for V.LEM and for I.LEM measurements).
      • Case of higher than 2 kA LEM can be treated relatively easily, perhaps transmitting small image current instead of the direct output LEM output current.
      • It is required to trim some gains, and to use some straps (0-Ohms resistor), both on the Config Panel control card, but also on the display one. A recommended solution is to use two identical small PCBs, used on control card and on display card. A sticker (EPC compatible) must be visible, with the type of the converter being readable. Changing a Config Panel in operation is then limited to replace the two configuration cards.
      • It is stated that the analog satelitte card can be trimmed with one resistor (V.LEM) specifically, since a very high reliability on this card is generally expected, and this will not be an issue in operation.

  • (2017-01-09) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel signals
      • Second DIM analog signals should be adjustable (jumpers) to select or the voltage (series configuration), or current (// one).

  • (2016-11-03) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel + COMBO elements code
      • List of faults (diagnostics) must be checked before next version of Combo Config Panel control card re-design. No fault must be forgotten.
      • FPA unsafe must be added, with the two links opening the contactor clearly identified and monitored.
      • A solution of internal configuration connector when exchanging a COMBO Config Panel in operation must be found. A dongle Flat cable connector?
      • The COMBO Config Panel top cover should be ideally: easily to remove (for configuration update), and clearly labelled so that it is obvious what has to be done inside when manipulating one. (label, instructions visible).
      • All HCR codes must be clarified in COMBO projects, for generic elements but also for specific combo projects.
      • Overview + BOM type documents should be reviewed to see if it makes sense to merge them.

  • (2016-10-07) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel family
      • Is already in the pipe (with PCB team): config panel 2cvs3&1 (ELENA), 2cvs2&2 (SM18).
      • Were also considered as COMBO generics: config panel 1cvs4 (NA), 3cvs1&1&1 (NA). It is decided to create the schematics, to ask to B. the price of the study (PCB Team should normally do this job), and the price of the PCB for validation. PCB fabrication is found too expensive will be treated as a DEMO order. (LPC channel).

  • (2016-10-04) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel: DIM signals
      • Any signal stopping the converter must be in the DIM digital signals, including Fast Abort, to ease the remote diagnosis. VsExtintlk is not a signal being used remotely, and must be considered as extra information only.
      • To free some dignals, it was decided to get "AC Fail" signals merged from all the units controlled (in case of //) into "AC global Fail of at least one units", and also "DC Fail" signals merged in the same way in a global signal "DC global Fail of at least one units". In case only one power source is used, the diagnosis is straight.
      • VsExtintlk = SKEXT + Eq. Stop + Earth Fault.
      • SKEXT is added to the DIM signals, and a "I Integrity" signal is added (which must be selectable as a warning or a fault), telling that the output LEM signal is not coherent with the internal current reported by the sum of each power source analog signal.

  • (2016-08-24) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel Light qty
      • Operational: 05 units. (01 pre-serie: assembled with EPC internal PCB to validate the PCB work + EPC assembly, + 04 series)
      • Assembly - Cables: the corresponding 5 sets are ideally ordered from external company (Burndy for 5 units to be bought only).
      • Assembly - PCB mounting: pre-serie = EPC internal PCB + component mounting, serie = EDA > PCB > CERN mounting component service.
      • Spare: 05 mechanical boxes, 18 bare PCBs from EPC internal order which can be used instead of EDA if not finalized up to PCB fabrication. No Burndy equipped cable.
      • Comment: the idea is to get one preserie quickly, and 4 next based ideally on CERN service EDA + PCB if judged adequate, and up to 10 units if required.

  • (2016-08-18) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel Light, earthing connection and possible use of it
      • It is decided to let the earthing (safety) of the magnet out of the Config Panel Light responsibility. In clear, using it requires to properly and in addition connecting the output of the converter to earth through or a straight connection, or other.
      • It is then not possible to imagine to let a Config Panel Light in operation, since earthing leakage current nor a proper earth connection of the load is realized.

  • (2016-08-17) Informal Meeting:
    • Yves + Nicolas: Config Panel Light
      • It is decided to define Config Panel Light as a 2x converter capability (installed on each). Since of 1U height, it is possible to change a 2U Config Panel by two Config Panel Light (2x 1U), 24V.dc power outputs being available from AC-DC Aux Powering Box.
      • Fast Abort functionality should involve the DC contactor (in addition to send the reference to 0, and/or sending a stop command), through a Burndy 8-p available (to be connected to the AC Distribution Box including the AC contactors if present).
      • It should be treated as an equipment with Patrice's sticker on all of them.
      • Pragmatic approach for mechanical pieces is ok (CERN-mag pieces + reworking).
      • PCB should be equipped with connectors to allow the use of already-wired Burndy elements.
      • 10 units to be built, all on PSU-Lab BC.
      • Demo PCB (20x) to be ordered based on internal PCB routing. Few mounted on demand. Series PCB (design) + manufacturing of 20x series equipped PCB to official CERN service.
      • No memorisation on any signal initiated by Config Panel Light.
      • SKEXT-EXTERNAL: RSD=0 + Ref=0(with-jumper-selector:on/off) + VS_ExtIntlk=1.
        SKEXT-POWER_ON=VS_RUN.
      • SKINTLK-FAST_ABORT: RSD=0 + Ref=0(with-jumper-selector:on/off) + AC_Contactor=0.
      • SKCMD-VS_REF: Direct link (no adaptation) from FGC to analog-ref in of power source.
SKCMD-VS_MEAS: Direct link to FGC from analog meas from power source.
        SKCMD-FASTPA_MEM: FastPa signal not memorized.
        SKCMD-POWER_ON=VS_RUN.
        SKCMD-VLOOP_OK_NOT=R-C on VS_RUN.
        SKCMD-VS_FAULT=1.
        SKCMD-VS_EXTINTLK=SKEXT-External signal non memorized.
        FGC dedicated lines: transmitted only.
