Work at CERN often requires the set up of a project, with many unique tasks to be planned with a lot of co-activities at CERN.

I face a project when...	... the work to be done or/and is:     - a set of interrelated tasks (typically new or unknown),     - involving different resources,     - over a fixed period, with time constraints,     - within a planned cost (and/or within other limitations),     - involving several people or services.
	... the "task" treated like a project makes life easier.

ISO also gives one definition: "A unique set of processes consisting of coordinated and controlled activities with start and end dates, performed to achieve project objectives."

Planning activity is a group activity. The project barebone is first the project mandate, then milestones being identified with, ideally, all actors involved.

A proposed process, very formalized is shown below, using existing only three main documents.

Project Mandate		This is the most important document of the project, describing the ultimate goal.
Project Milestone      Plan		All milestones are identified, and the responsability chart (actors) defined. It is used to design, follow & present the project at a high level, and must stay comprehensive (short & clear).
Activity Plan		An activity plan is a detailed plan which describes all activities, following associated expenses (links) of the project.

Machine Matrix		A machine matrix overview is a document suitable when several power converters are concerned. All circuits are described, with their rating and associated converters. This file is used for machine design, installation and even for commissioning.
Functional Specification		A functional specification is a document which states and describes the delivery of the project; this document will be signed, and approved by the users. It will ensure the need, at the origin of the project is correctly understood, and well answered.
