Overview
It appears that almost all our electronic systems used at CERN use and rely on what is commonly named: auxiliary power supply. Reliability of such equipment impacted directly the whole system reliability (except redundant system, where the reliability will more impact the turnover effort to replace faulty units).
Mandate
SY-EPC propose the creation of a service to TE (CERN) members to test and validate low power supplies (<200W).
Work includes advices, testing, burnin, help on issues...with adequate power soaks capacity (up to 100 units at the same time) in order to be able to validate MTBF of up to 100 000 hours. More info in this FAQ below:

Why can't i do it myself?
- Well, of course you can do it and we strongly encourage you to do so. Nevertheless, a lot of equipments (EMC devices, spectrum analyser, loads, climate chambers...) is required to do work of high quality, and one service for every CERN people could certainly propose extended means.
Does it cost me something?
- Yes, but not much in reality. Normally service is quite flexible and can adapt load to each user needs (see below the range). Practically, a budget code will always be required, but some real specific cases, like testing several units in parrallel will only require some PCB or series adaptation work. Also, receiving and checking several units in reception mode has to be treated individually.
How much time for a final report?
- A report should be given on direct measurements (not on reliability long run) quite quickly, in less than a week or two.
Queues and Priorities?
- This service is dedicated to TE department in priority. Nevertheless, service will be opened to all CERN people, submitted to a request followed by an approval, judging if the job enters our mandate.
When will it be operationnal?
- As soon as we got ressources to start the project. There will be a inertia of several months before it really runs in production mode.
Can i access result data?
- Report is expected to be webpages extracted from databases data, for optimizing time to enter and retrieve them. It will then be easy to navigate compare and select some tested and known items. Take care that this kind of material can change from manufacturer re-design.
MTBF of 100 000 hours?
- Yes, testing so high MTBF is a hard task, since it required a lot of units to be running for several hours (3 months of 100 units running full time + no fault on all of them for a MTBF of 100 000 hours validation is required). Practically, some automatic logging system must count the failures, and system must be capable to propose a load of several kWatts.
