Overview
CERN uses commercial units as well as home-made/designed power sources, mainly when commercial & off-the shelves solution doesn't correspond to CERN specific uses. This service check the compatibility of commercial units with regards to CERN requirements.
Mandate
SY-EPC organize a dedicated service to validate commercial power sources in order to evaluate they can be suitable for given applications.

What to expect from such internal service?
- Procedural approach, with clear and defined steps to be validated when testing a given commercial power supply. Reports treated in a given format, better lisibility for suppliers regarding to what makes the difference for CERN applications.
How much time for a final report?
- Since tests are relatively heavy, and on several domains (power, electrical, high precision integration etc...), a commercial power source can be treated in 1-3 months time generally.
Can i access result data?
- Yes, please go to Records tab, where all the units which have been evaluated are normally listed. Access is generally granted to CERN users.
How is decided if a relevant commercial unit can be of interest or not?
- SY-EPC members usually sort potential candidates available in the market, which can be compatible with known requirements for projects under development.
Power Supply of interest: Voltage or Current Source?
- It is exactly the kind of question this lab can answer: some power supplies propose current regulation, with internal sensor. The accuracy of this mode of operation is deeply studied, with measurement down to ppm and following a strict procedure and self-qualified lab. Result is the range level of precision, for example, the studied Power Source/Supply can be used.
Can i access result data?
- Report is expected to be webpages extracted from databases data, for optimizing time to enter and retrieve them. It will then be easy to navigate compare and select some tested and known items.
